Tower of Strength
Blackpool Tower in Lancashire was inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Opened to the public in May 1894 it is 518 feet tall, contains 2,493 tons of steel and 93 tons of cast iron. Each of the four legs of the Tower rest on concrete foundations 35 feet square and 12 feet deep. This is a huge structure that is instantly recognisable as Blackpool's indomitable landmark. Many of us have people in our lives that stand strong and tall like mighty towers. That we look up to, revere, take strength and inspiration from. Sometimes, we forget just how important they are to us, we forget to tell them, forget to reminicise, forget to listen. We think they will just always be there. In a world of heroes with feet of clay, this week's celebrity, today's novelty, this season's must visit destination, it is good to pause and remember the unsung heroes, the ordinary, extraordinary forgotten landmarks in our lives.
